CSS3 and Internet Typography

Why isn’t this being pushed?

Safari 3.1

How does it get round font licensing? Couldn’t people set web-pages in an expensive typeface and any user with Safari start ‘stealing’ these fonts? Imagine If someone released a new font that could openly be used cross-platform, cross-browser, packaged with everything possible. They’d be famous! I bet someone wouldn’t let it happen though.

“With CSS3 web fonts in Safari 3.1, web designers can go beyond web-safe fonts to create stunning new websites using standards-based technology. Safari automatically recognizes websites that use custom fonts and downloads them as they’re needed.”

Wow. This is great. However, this is going to cause a lot of bad typographers to go wild and use some nasty faces in some messed up ways. Amateurs unite, your time of tacky design has come!

I know this is old news, but I’ve only heard bits about it and still can’t believe there hasn’t been more discussion about this. I’m off to research CSS3.
